Coming Home

Hey Everyone!

Brett is FINALLY coming home. Friday, September 25th is the BIG DAY!!

Typical Brett said, "I was talking to the Docs today. I have been here for 4 months, I have noticed the sign on the inside of the door (like in a hotel) that check out time is 11am. However, I have classes scheduled through 4pm on Friday. I have things to do, what happens if I don't check out at 11?"

I have more slow, steady progress to report.
Brett continues to work on the muscles he has today. We are searching for adaptive "equipment" to help with more of the everyday. He has been taking a cab home each weekend day, and loves to have coffee on the patio. However, he is tired of asking me for another drink of coffee-through a straw. Remember, he can feel his pointer and thumb (with deep pressure) but can't yet move any of his fingers. So, grabbing any beverage doesn't work...yet. His Occupational Therapist is ordering longer forks, spoons and some type of glass/cup that Brett can learn to use on his own.

We have home health care lined up in the morning and evening each day when he comes home. All sorts of equipment is being delivered to the house, and it will take us all a little time to adjust.

Brett was pretty much away from home since Christmas caring for his Father and Mother in their last days. Our family of four rerouted our reunion in Mexico (due to swine flu outbreak) to Hawaii the day after Bizzy's Memorial Service. We felt the love in Jacqui's Kona House for 12 days. Then were home for one week before driving to Washington to clean out Wayne and Bizzy's house.

We know we are facing some family adjustments in the coming months. We are going to do our best to be patient and flexible. Things certainly aren't the same, but we will make the most of what we have, and laugh along the way.

Caroline is so excited to have Daddy home to help with homework each night. And Cole is excited to have Dad in the house-every day, and every night.

We didn't make it through the last four months without the love and support of all of you!

  1. Kelly, We are all thinking about you and wishing you luck in your new home. We hope that everything will start to settle down soon. Just take it one day at a time. One day you are going to wake up and it will all be better. We wish we could still see you across the alley, but if you are ever nearby please come say hello.

    I am so glad Brett is coming home and I want you to know that just reading this brought me to tears!! You have all been in my thoughts and prayers each day of this journey and I thank God that he has seen you through. I love you all so much and can't wait to talk to you this weekend to get the scoop on his homecoming!

    We think of you every day and are glad to hear the good news. I check this site daily--several times--and I keep you in my thoughts throughout the day. Here's one of my favorite quotes from Anne Lammott's book, Bird by Bird:

    Ladies first Brett... Happy Birthday Kelly! I noted on your calendar that this is your special day as I am writing this on 9/29. What a nice way to celebrate with Brett being home. I echo all of your F & F in saying that we are always so very hopeful in our continual thoughts and prayers for you. And since you have been blessed with so many F & F there is probably not a second in the day when you don't have positive vibes coming over the airways. Phase I complete! Congrats on the launching of Phase II!!!! Welcome home.

    I can't believe it has been so long since 1. I have seen you all, and 2. since I have checked the Blog - but what a great day to check it and see that Brett is now home with the family. I can only imagine how nice it must be to be able to see one another every morning.

    You all are in my thoughts often! And again, I am happy to babysit anytime you need a break!

    I hope you are adjusting to HOME~!

    Not a day goes by that we don't think of all of you!! Reid and I often speak in amazement of the courage, patience, and steadfast determination that the both of you have. I am so glad to hear you are home Brett. I believe that more true healing can begin for your entire family now that you are HOME and those sweet angels of yours can see their Daddy's face anytime they need to !!!

    I am sure you both have some very dark moments along with some very bright ones!! Our prayer for you Brett and you Kelly are that the bright moments out weigh the dark ones!!!

    We are constant pulling for you all-- wishing we lived closer so we were not so helpless in our efforts to share this burden with you.

    Greetings again from Selah. Home of the Vikings and Magic's Pizza. There is a new Hotel here next to Save on Foods (formally Phase ll). The next one is going to freakin' blow your mind. . . we have a new Taco Bell in Selah too, right next to the phase ll. Helms Hardware moved down to that same area. It's big and it's cool. Spires road is still completely out of commission.

    I was absolutely delighted to see the photos of you in your manual wheelchair! No neck brace anymore? Best of all, you're home by now. God is so good. He has clearly blessed you through these past months of trauma and recovery.

    I want you to know that I continue to pray for you and your family. But mostly I'm praying for your complete, 100% healing. I am not giving up on you. I'm going to keep praying until you're healed, or until one of us cacks.

    Meanwhile, I'm thoroughly inspired by your commitment to do everthing you possibly can to strengthen your body in order to speed the healing process. Way to go. Don't give up. You have no idea what kind of impact this will have on your kids as they watch you push yourself toward this goal.

    I wish so much I could be there to help ln some way. Please keep the blogs coming, even if they're short.

    Brett,
    When you're ready to start posting and composing emails, I have a physical therapy question for you. I've read about your PT practice in CO. and you seem to be some sort of Therapy god. Here's my question:
    I ran a marathon and endured some cronic pain during training from my plantar fascia. It got progressively worse as you might expect. I've taken almost 2 months off of it and it feels almost normal. My MD says those injuries never get better, PT wont help. I just need to find something else to do that wont aggravate it so much.

    Is he right?

    Still praying for you. I loved the new pictures Kelly posted.
