It's been several days, a new blogspot, and I have lots of updates!
First and foremost, Brett is so happy to be back in the Mile High City!
The air ambulance transport from Salt Lake City to Denver was a TRIP!!! These two men, in "flight suits" walked in the hospital room at the amazing University of Utah Hospital and took charge. They started confirming details and hooking up equipment to triple check all the vital information to ensure Brett was indeed ready for the adventure. They had the great support of the doctor and nursing staff at the hospital, as well as the ambulance team that drove us safely to the airport in SLC.
Brett was provided an adequate cocktail of medication to ensure his pain was minimized. We "boarded" the twin turbo prop airplane with a seasoned crew. As I was walking to the plane, the pilot met me and indicated that I would be riding in the co-pilot seat. Yikes! Brett, in usual fashion started talking, and talking and telling stories and finally the Respiratory Therapist called to me to confirm that indeed, "Brett had talked himself to sleep." We left Salt Lake with an unforgettable skim along the Great Salt Lake, mountains all around and said farewell to Utah!!!
We landed at DIA rather than Centennial airport due to the rain last Tuesday. As an amazing supporter in this journey reminded me, the sunshine was reserved for Brett's return home, as in home sweet home.
Brett was greeted by doctors and nurses at Craig Hospital. Wayne and Keith flew a commercial flight back to Denver and met us at the hospital.
By this time, it was late in the day, and my Mom brought Caroline and Cole to the hospital to see their Daddy. I met them in the lobby to talk about Brett's injury, his surgery to heal the spine and the neck collar they would see and that his arms and legs are still hurt. Caroline quickly stood up and said, "There are chairs, called wheelchairs, that will get Daddy where he needs to go while he heals." Yes, children are far more aware of every detail than we sometimes remember.
We quickly set Caroline and Cole each at the shoulder of Brett while he rested in bed. Once they saw that twinkle in Brett's eyes, heard his voice, and his questions about whether or not they were taking care of Maggie Dog and doing their chores, they were at ease. Cole especially wanted to stay close to Daddy.
Prognosis, Prognosis, Prognosis. Yes, the million dollar question. The doctors and staff at Craig Hospital have repeated that we need to wait and see what happens. His recovery will be a long road. We certainly understand the medical facts surrounding his serious injury. However, we ask that you continue with us being positive and optimistic. We all know that Brett has amazing strength and determination and a great outlook on life.
We are humbled at the offers for help with ANYTHING (and I quote that in all caps). Please know that the "Honey Do" list is growing by the minute. Please refer to the calendar and Wish List for ideas.
Brett has been at Craig hospital for 4 days. I have witnessed amazing strides in his emotional state from the family/friend visits, well wishes from this blog, emails, cards or phone calls. He is thriving and anxious to get some therapy going. This week was full of baseline tests, scans and planning. Next week, his "schedule" is beginning to fill up. Currently he has between 11-1pm is open and after 4pm. We will be at Craig Hospital for months, Brett would love to see you!!!
All my Love~Kelly
Brett - Great to see you today! You look fantastic - even with the rainbow belt! I'll see if I can't find a coordinating bumper sticker for the back of your wheelchair. We had a great time and I hope that we brought you 1/100th of the the happiness your brought us. Your attitude and smile are fantastic and contagious. Keep up the good work - and the shoulder shrugs! And, of course, the other exercises we laughed about. I'll see you in a couple of days! -- Eric, Kristi & Kate.
ReplyDeleteBrettie, Hope to get in there to see you this week...I was waiting for things to settle a bit, but I heard a certain DPS trainer and his DU sidekick have already been up to visit so I guess they'll let anybody in! :) I want a full rehab recap...irrevrently recounted in true Purdom style! Work hard when they let you, rest when you can!

Small world, huh? Sounds like things are going well thanks to your amazing attitude. Would love to chat sometime...still prayin'
